Tuakana Teina

Tuakana Teina means helping a buddy with their learning. For a Tuakana Teina day we participated in technology challenges. It was a good experience to be working with older buddies who could help us make the marble maze. It was fun!

3D shapes

This term in Geometry we learned about 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. We use skewers and blu tac to make models of our 3 dimensional shapes.

Technology Challenge

Last week we had a challenge where we had to hold our dictionary for at least 10 seconds on a paper stand. After trial and error we worked out a design of the stand that could hold our dictionary for more than 20 seconds.

Technology Challenge: A Tent Made with Paper and masking tape.

This Term we have been learning about Technology. One of the challenges was to make a liveable tent using paper and masking tape. We decided to make a tent with 9 sides. It is called a nonagon because it has 9 sides. It has a pyramid at the top. The sides of the nonagon have triangular walls. We had to plan to make a strong base so that it could hold the weight of the walls and the roofs. To make the walls strong we provided support of cardboard on the joints. We provided a pillar in the centre to support the roof. It took us more than a week to complete our tents.
It can occupy at least 5 people from our class. We love to read books in our tent.

ART: Making name cards

We made these name plates earlier in November. We did them after completing all our assignments. They were easy to do and the results were spectacular. We used 'Drip Paint' technique to make our backgrounds. Have a look!

Keeping the Ocean Clean!

Here is Room 10's entry into the Manaiakalani Film Festival for 2014.  We were inspired by the information we found out about the sea as part of our inquiry topic - Tagata o le Moana.  The sea is such an important part of our lives and we need to protect it!  Enjoy our movie.

My School

School is important because we can get brainy. We learn new things and give feedback to people. We reflect on our learning and try to get better at reading and writing. Sometimes I play at the park and do Art. We read books to get brainy. If there were no schools, then we will not learn. we would have no books to read and  we would not get brainy. Then we would not get a good job. I like school because it helps me to read and write. I like to meet my friends at school and I like to do Art at school. school is the best place for people to learn. Every child should go to school everyday to learn.

I have had a surgery I am on the wheel chair. The doctor said I have to be on a wheel chair for 8 weeks. So I come to school on a wheel chair. The children in my class are very helpful. They take me around on my wheel chair. When I cannot go for gymnastics or sports, my teacher Mrs. Sharma stays with me. It is nice to sit in the class and work on my
netbook or chat with Mrs. Sharma.

Celebrating Festivals

People feel really awesome on festivals. sometimes it’s fantastic and people can sometimes get surprised when they get amazing gifts. Everyone feels beautiful and wonderful at christmas or Diwali. There is a lot of activity around. Families like to have barbeques and celebrate Diwali and Christmas on festivals.I feel like I am everywhere. I feel different when we have festivals. It is relaxing but sometimes when there are kids screaming I  feel weird and strange.
People love to celebrate festivals.  People do fireworks diyas, lights and candles. They like to clean their house and decorate their houses. People like to get gifts sweets and new clothes. Then the adults give presents to their kids.
Sometimes people light  fireworks and they can cause trouble. People can burn themselves by the fireworks. They even light candles which can drop on to the ground and burn the carpet. Then the house will burn down and they will die from the fire. Sometimes people gamble on festivals. Gambling is bad because they go and play games to win money but they lose money and then they don’t care about food for their family.
Fireworks are dangerous and people need to be careful when they are lighting them.
On festival days some people can’t celebrate because they are too poor. We need to think about the poor on these days. We must try and save some money to buy gifts for the poor so that they can feel happy on festivals too.

Celebrating festivals

Celebrating Festivals

People feel excited when they celebrate festivals because they get to have lots of fun on festivals.
I am very happy when it is christmas because I get gifts from my family. I feel  fantastic because we get treats. It is exciting to watch fireworks. People look beautiful on Diwali. I feel awesome when I celebrate festivals.

People celebrate festivals to bring happiness  and fun in their lives. On festivals people light candles and fireworks that can be dangerous. Fireworks could burn your house. People spend money on festival. They spend money for the decorations on Diwali and Christmas.
We spend money to get decorations and fireworks and candles. Instead if we buy food for people they will feel happy.
